In a major step towards saving lives of people on road, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Friday said that only Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) certified helmets would be manufactured and sold to two wheeler riders in India. This would help in reducing number of fatalities on road.
It is to be noted that following directions from the Apex court on road safety, a committee was formed to consider lighter helmets from riders. These helmets would be convenient according to the climate.
What figures say
According to the Ministry’s website, as many as 1365 people lost their lives on road for not wearing helmets in Gujarat. With this figure Gujarat stood at 11th place in India. Uttar Pradesh was the first place to loose 4,399 people on road in accidents for not wearing safety device or helmet. In Ahmedabad, 349 people died last year which was 316 in the year 2018.
Also, in rural areas of Gujarat region, 4596 and in urban areas 2130 people lost their lives last year in fatal road accidents.
