Talking about Gandhiji’s idea of creating gurukul and ashram based educational institutions, he said that after returning to India from Africa, Gandhiji visited various educational institutions across India. One such educational institution was the Gurukul, Kangli, founded by Swami Shraddhanandaji in Haridwar. Students here used to work during the day and study at night.
He used to send the remuneration after the day’s labor to help Gandhi’s satyagraha in Africa. Influenced by the high educational values and morals of the students of Gurukul, Kangli, Gandhiji was inspired to establish residential schools and ashram schools based on Gurukul tradition and Chhatravas tradition across the country. He added that Pujya Bapu believed that if the young mind is kept in an environment of special rituals, then their mentality can be made useful to the society and the nation.
Talking about Gandhiji’s life values, he said, Bapu’s life was full of Indian values. Maharishi Patanjali’s principles of non-violence, truth, celibacy and non-violence were adopted by Gandhiji. He built the ashram only to give practical form to high thought values. ‘Mera Jeevan Hi Mera Sandesh Hai’ – was Pujya Bapu’s motto. Bapu’s life was really like a message, he added.
Talking about how students should learn from Gandhiji’s life values, he said that every student studying in the ashram should read Pujya Bapu’s biographies and think deeply in private, go to the root of Bapu’s thoughts, read about his Satyagraha and get inspiration from the Satyagrahas, one said by Bapu. One should know and study the mission of human welfare respected by Bapu by deep meditation on one word.
